If you missed the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
at the Nottingham Auditorium in Dayton, you missed a
great program.  We have posted a few of our pictures
from the event here, because we want everyone to know
how much we enjoyed it.
Rita Gilmore led a lovely,
deeply moving program. The Dayton High School Choir
and Band performed beautifully.
Dr. Henry L. Dugat,
State Representative Dr. Alma A. Allen, Baseball
hall-of-famer Grover "Deacon" Jones
, and Basketball
hall-of-famer Elvin "Big E" Hayes
(all seen in the first
two pictures) gave wonderful, inspirational speeches,
not to mention
Connie Paintsil's terrific introduction.
Robert Schaadt also spoke eloquently and prepared a
great calendar full of historical pictures.
County Judge
Phil Fitzgerald
, Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett, and Dayton
Mayor Pro Tem Frosty Pruitt
all presented special
proclamations.  The
Dayton High School football team
and Coach Jerry Stewart
were honored for their
accomplishments, including the 2007 state playoff run.
(Some of the players are in the third picture.)
Assistant
District Attorney Michael Mark
presented special Citizen
Recognition Awards to
Jo Ann Paul, June Jackson,
Jack Hartel, Greg Arthur, and Wilda Carrier
.  (June
Jackson is in the second picture.  Jack Hartel and
Michael Mark are in the fourth picture.)
Jazette
Simmons and the Liberty County Mass Choir
got
everyone on their feet with an amazing performance.   At
the end of the program was a release of doves.  I wish I
had room here to show all the pictures from the event
and do justice to all the speakers and presenters.  It was
a tribute that really showcased the life of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., and his exceptional commitment to
racial equality in this county.  This was the Tenth Annual
Celebration.  We really  want to encourage everyone to
make the Eleventh Annual Celebration next year.  You
won't regret it!

Elks Lodge Barbeque Cookoff
Liberty, Texas
The Liberty Elks Lodge held a Barbeque cookoff on January 18-19, 2008.  The David Ripkowski
team won or placed in several events, including ribs, chicken and brisket.  David had to forfeit
his bloodymary prize because he misplaced his ticket!  A special charity auction raised several
hundred dollars for the Elks Lodge "Friends in Need."  By the way, David's ribs are SO
GOOD--you should really try them if you get a chance!
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Cleveland, Texas
January 21, 2008
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day was celebrated
with a motorcade/parade through Cleveland on
Monday.  After winding through the streets, the
procession stopped at the MLK Pavilion where
Willie Carter hosted a ceremony honoring the
legacy of Dr. King.  After a reading of Dr. King's
famous "I Have A Dream" speech,
Richard
Ayers
gave an inspirational speech (top right
picture) to the group.  Cleveland Vietnam
Veteran and Precinct 20 Chairman,
Reuben
Johnson
(middle right picture), organized the
event.  Cleveland Mayor
Jill Kirkonis (bottom
right picture) read a proclamation honoring Dr.
King from the City of Cleveland. After the
ceremony, everyone enjoyed hot dogs at the
New Bethel Baptist Church.
Bulletin Board (continued)

Here are some pictures from events we've attended.  Lee will keep adding to the
bulletin board as we go along.

Campaigning is exhausting, there is no doubt about that, but the people we've met
make it all worthwhile.  Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to talk to us
and has invited us to attend their meetings and programs.  We've loved it!
